It was a very deliberate choice when Magali Gentric and Jason Waterhouse decided to open Stockroom in Kyneton. They loved the diverse demographic of the town with both long-term residents like farming families who had been there for generations as well as the gentrified community from Melbourne who visited on the weekends or moved up for a slower pace of life. Magali says, “Despite their differences, everyone gets along.” She has found this to be a perfect blend of people to showcase and educate about quality contemporary art.
Magali has lived in the area for 17 years and previously had a business in Hepburn Springs. She says that the catalyst for people making the trip out to Kyneton was sparked by local Annie Smithers, who wrote a regular column in the Epicure at the time and ran one of the first exceptional restaurants in Kyneton. As a result, more and more outstanding eateries began popping up.
The town is happily situated on the train line between Bendigo and Melbourne and is easily accessible for a day trip either via public transport or the Calder Freeway by car. Many tourists come on the weekend to enjoy the amazing cafes and restaurants, contemporary art and culture and to walk along the popular Campaspe River track. Magali says they often have people come in asking for good places to stay and eat.
Visitors have increased post-covid, seeking escapism whether for a day trip or a tree change. Magali says, “The combination of the Australian landscape’s native bush, like Black Hill Reserve, the European buildings and botanical gardens, and the eclectic community attracts a diverse range of visitors.” Local businesses have worked alongside historic architecture such as The Butter Factory where The Stockroom is housed, The Mill on Piper and many others to preserve the character of the original country town with a contemporary twist.
