If running is your thing, why not join the Macedon Ranges Running Group? We spoke to Kelly, the coordinator of the Kyneton branch of the group, to find out more.
The Macedon Ranges Running Group is open to people of all ages, abilities, experience and confidence. They run two Start Running Group programs each year in Autumn and Spring to coach people to run five kilometres. Members then have the option of being coached to ten kilometres. There are 500 paid members across the Macedon Ranges and the Kyneton group has around ten members who run regularly together. Members can run with any of the branches within the shire. For example, some Woodend locals run with the Kyneton group because the times and days suit better than that of their branch.
The Kyneton group meets at the Aquatic Centre and runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 pm and Sundays at 8 am. The group has a variety of routes to choose from and they may be planned in advance or decided spontaneously on the day.
Macedon Ranges Running Members also run together in other locations around Victoria. If someone in the group is doing a half or full marathon, many sign up for a 5 or 10-kilometre run and then cheer for their teammates at the finish line. All the branches of the Macedon Ranges Running Group also meet up on occasion for a milestone run and a barbecue afterwards.
The Running Group is very affordable to join. It is only $10 for individuals and $15 for families for the year. This fee is purely to provide insurance. Kelly says, with very much tongue in cheek, ‘The worst part about the group is the running’. She believes the friendships, camaraderie and support of the group are what makes it wonderful. What’s more, it is good for your health. Why run alone if you can run with friends?
