Award Winning: Kyneton Tennis Club

kyneton tennis club

Kyneton Tennis Club sits aside from the Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre in the heart of town. The association keeps the local community spirit pumping, as well as its members fit, healthy and connected. The club strongly encourages new members to join and those who are coming back to tennis after a break. There is literally something for everyone: from social midweek tennis, league competitions, children’s lessons and clinics, to adult coaching and cardio tennis.
The club continues the excellent work it was recognised for in 2013 when it received the award for Most Outstanding Club of the Year from Tennis Victoria. It demonstrated excellence in engagement with members, for competitions, coaching and growth. The Kyneton Tennis Club has also had success in fundraising for new tennis courts. Six brand new courts are currently going in as well as new lights. This project has been ten years in the making, $280 000 of which was fundraised by the club itself and the remainder provided by the government. We spoke to the President of the club, Simon Meadows, who said that the club also relies on and is grateful for countless volunteers and sponsorship from local businesses. With their assistance, they are able to maintain and develop the facility.
The Club’s coach of six years, Marcus Willis, is also highly celebrated. He won the Victorian Government Community Sports and Recreation Award in 2013 and has also worked with some of Australia’s top tennis players. Marcus coaches both children and adults in private or group lessons for all abilities. He also runs clinics, having recently finished a four-week session with a local school, Our Lady of the Rosary. Marcus believes that Kyneton’s tennis courts are the best in the Macedon Ranges. He says that the most rewarding thing about coaching in Kyneton is watching children go from beginner level right through to being able to play competitive tennis with confidence.
