The Kyneton Daffodil Festival is running from the 5th to 15th of September this year and the theme is apt, “All the colours of spring”. The country festival is volunteer-run, spans 10 days and involves the whole town with a range of activities, events and competitions including: open gardens, the Dog Dash, a flower show, antique fair, literary events, live entertainment, scarecrow competition, markets, art and photography exhibitions, all culminating into the main event at its conclusion, The Grand Parade and Fair.

The festival has been running since early last century and was inspired by a few key people including: Alister Clark, a breeder of roses and daffodils; Hugh Dettman of Kyneton, who started his own daffodil breeding program; and Eve Murray of Langley, who learnt from Dettman how to grow daffodils from seed. By the 1950s the Show was one of the most popular in the state and it has now been running annually for over 50 years. It is no wonder the daffodil has become synonymous with the town.

Sharryn Smith, the Vice President of the Festival says the event “Has grown so much since I was a child. It’s wonderful to see new residents embracing our community event, adding fresh energy and enthusiasm while honouring its rich history and keeping its spirit alive.”

Local artists involved in the show reinforce the camaraderie of this celebration. Clare Simons Kelly will exhibit work again this year and says, “It is a beautiful show which is inclusive and supportive of all levels of artists”. Maxine McKee’s works are also being showcased with 14 other potter, glass and sculpture makers from around Victoria in the “Grounded” Exhibition. She says, “For many years I have timed my exhibitions and events around the festival as there is a special love and exciting engagement in the community.”
