This year the Kyneton Football Netball Club celebrated 151 years since it was founded in 1868. As in many regional and rural centres, the sporting club is an integral part of the community. We spoke to Karen O’Sullivan who is the current president and the first female in the role. Karen says that the club is very encouraging of women taking up leadership positions. Even before her appointment as president, she was involved with the club as her four boys have all played football there over the years.
The Kyneton Football Netball Club caters for all and champions its local players. The club is competitive within the Bendigo league and aims to build local stock. There are men’s, women’s and junior football teams as well as senior and junior netball. The women’s football team has been playing for the last five years and the senior men’s football team is fortunate to have past AFL player, Nathan Thompson, as their coach.
The local community, including businesses, individuals and families are avid supporters of the Kyneton Football Netball Club. There are dedicated committees who ensure everything runs efficiently and they are always searching for new ways to promote and fundraise. The club also has a wide range of sponsors such as: Hardwicks, Kyneton on Riverside, Kyneton Toyota, Barfold Quarries, PSR Legal, and Prendergast Earth Moving, just to name a few. Recent funds and grants from the Federal, State and local government have meant the club has been able to upgrade its facilities. There have been improvements made to underneath the grandstand; the canteen; and the pavilion on the bottom oval, making it inclusive for women and girls.
The Club is always looking for volunteers and for people to become involved in joining teams, no matter their age or ability. Newcomers to the area are also welcome to join. Are you a footballer or netballer looking for a tree change? Visit Kyneton and join a community that celebrates local sport.
